Healing Doesn't Have An Expiration Date.

As crazy and bizarre as it sounds, I believe Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy to be my spirit animal. Partly because of her daughter Eunice, a great American philanthropist, but mainly because I've felt drawn to her from the moment I read her history. I felt inspired by her courage and fell in love with her curiosity, interest, and enthusiasm for life. In one of her many famous quotes, she said

It has been said, ‘time heals all wounds.’ I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting it’s sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone.”

I agree with her because healing doesn't have a specific time frame where the clock stops and all the wounds magically disappear; it does not work like that. Just as our physical injuries leave scars behind, so do our emotional wounds.

Healing is a process that is never linear, it's a journey with many bumps, twists, and turns, but it is also a learning curve. The key to healing is not trying to rush it, and as human beings, it's in our nature to avoid any feelings of pain, whether physical or emotional distress; in return, we end up rushing the healing process. Our wounds cannot just disappear at will. Despite how long we spend trying to convince ourselves otherwise, they might be invisible to other people, but in the back of our minds, we have the scars that remind us of our pain and sufferings. We acknowledge our pain because it's an essential part of the healing process and try to find the goodness in our life despite it.

Healing takes courage, it takes time, it takes strength, it takes practice, and it takes love. Healing isn't something that you choose once. But instead, it's something you must choose over and over again; why? Because you need to do it for YOU. Do it because YOU want it. Even on the days when it feels as though you're back at the beginning of your journey, give yourself some compassion and remind yourself that healing doesn't have an expiration date nor a step-by-step guide or path for you take to get to go from "healing" to "healed." Emotional healing is a personal journey with ups and downs; your healing doesn't have to look a certain way for it to be valid. Healing looks different for everyone. Remind yourself that you deserve healing because you seek growth, happiness, and health, and in case no one has told you this before, I'm proud of you for doing your best.
